- Educates individuals, students, or teams on the rules, strategies, and techniques for a sport or sports.
- Plans, organizes, and leads practice sessions.

- Identifies the strengths and weaknesses of players and modifies coaching strategies accordingly.
- Remains current on changes in rules, coaching philosophies and techniques, and technology relevant to a particular sport or sports.
