Introduction

The

Maryland School for the Deaf (MSD) is a diverse, bilingual community who in

partnership with families, provides an equitable and exemplary education in a

nurturing, engaging, and challenging environment to ensure our students achieve

personal excellence and become lifelong learners. As such, we are looking for

dedicated individuals who can join us in the education of the children at MSD.

LOCATION OF POSITION

MSD, Columbia Campus, 8169 Old Montgomery Road, Ellicott City, MD 21043

Main Purpose of Job

Cooperation of responsibilities with Athletic Director for the Middle School athletic programs at the Columbia Campus, including working with the Office of Student Affairs on the master schedule (both campuses: Columbia and Frederick), and working with the Director of Public Relations on social media, news, pictures, and archives. Supervision of coaches, preparation of summer sports camps, and preparation of equipment and athletic facilities. Serves as a building manager and is responsible for ensuring that all facilities and grounds are prepared for each game, as well as ensuring that they are cleaned up after each event, coordinates the scheduling of referees, scorekeepers and timers, attends league meetings, coordinates coaches training sessions, is available to coach as needed, and assumes other responsibilities as assigned by the Athletic Director.

POSITION DUTIES

Maintains

the Middle School athletic program at

the Columbia Campus;

Assesses

emergency and crisis situations, makes appropriate contacts and referrals, and

provides interim emergency medical and other assistance until specialized

assistance is available;

Hires and

supervises coaches;

May

be expected to participate in the development of training and workshops for the

coaches;

Maintains

strict confidentiality of students, as well as school personnel information;

Collaborates

with the Office of Student Affairs on MSD’s master schedule;

Works with the Director of Public Relations on coordinating and

disseminating athletic news and events by writing stories and posting on social

media, including filming and editing video clips;

Supports the design of social media graphics for game day announcements

and to recognize accomplishments of student-athletes, coaches, and staff

members;

Organizes media/photo days for each sport; works with a

photographer;

Maintains and organizes archives for each sport for the website;

Helps

with the preparation of summer sports camps;

Participates

in appropriate professional development training;

Attends

league meetings, when needed;

Makes

periodic safety checks of the athletic facilities, when asked;

Provides support as needed while traveling to and from away

games; and

Performs other related duties assigned by the Athletic Director.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree required; willingness to work

towards Master’s Degree or Certification of RMSAA (Registered Middle School

Athletic Administrator).

Background in Sports Management or related fields

preferred.

Fluency in ASL, written English, and knowledge of Deaf community

required.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Ability to obtain crowd manager

certification;

Ability to learn emergency medical

procedures;

Ability to obtain CPR/First Aid

certification; and

Skill in written English sufficient to permit

fluent and accurate communication with students and parents/guardians who are

not proficient in American Sign Language.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees in this classification are required to be

proficient in American Sign Language and in written English.

2. Candidates will need

to provide three letters of recommendation.

3. Hold or obtain a valid driver license.

4. New hires are subject to a criminal background investigation at their own expense. (Maryland Code, Family Law Article 1, Sections 5-560-568)

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
