The Head Basketball Coach position is a full-time position responsible to the Director, Intercollegiate Athletics. This individual must possess proven leadership abilities in planning, organizing, and administering a basketball program and maintaining a high degree of academic and athletic excellence within the program. Tyler Junior College is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and home to 70 National Championships. The Athletics department at Tyler Junior College plays an integral role in the success of student-athletes and is widely recognized as one of the premier two-year intercollegiate athletic departments in the nation..
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Primary ResponsibilitiesProgram LeadershipDirect all aspects of the basketball program, including planning, organizing, and administering team operations.Develop and implement the teams’ philosophies in coordination with assistant coaches.Establish team culture, discipline standards, and performance expectations.Coaching & Player DevelopmentPlan and conduct practices, workouts, and game preparation.Evaluate player performance and provide instruction for skill development.Foster leadership, sportsmanship, and personal development among student-athletes.Assisting as needed in the student athlete drug education, counseling, and testing programs.Promote academic success while monitoring academic progress in collaboration with academic support services.Encourage community engagement and leadership opportunities for players.RecruitingDevelop and execute recruiting strategies to identify and attract qualified basketball athletes.Build relationships with high school, junior college, and 4-year coaches.Coordinate recruiting visits, evaluations, and communication with prospects.Ensure recruiting practices follow all rules of the conference, region, and NJCAAStaff ManagementHire, supervise, and evaluate assistant coaches and support staff.Delegate responsibilities related to recruiting, scouting, and player development.Foster collaboration among coaching staff, athletic trainers, performance staff, and academic support.Program AdministrationManage the basketball program budget, equipment, and travel logistics.Coordinate scheduling of games and practices with athletic department leadership.Maintain compliance with all departmental, institutional, conference, and NJCAA guidelines and regulations.Community & Institutional EngagementRepresent the university at athletic events, alumni functions, and community outreach activities.Support fundraising initiatives and program promotion.Maintain a positive public image for the basketball program and institution.Other duties as needed or as assigned by the Director, Intercollegiate Athletics.Secondary ResponsibilitiesCompensation includes instruction of two sport-specific athletic courses. Courses taught beyond two will result in additional compensation.
