Qualifications

Has the ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.
Has previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport (major sports).
Must have substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and continually examine new theories and procedures relevant to the field.
Must serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes through instruction and actions.

Reporting
Reports to the athletic director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the high school principals.

Supervisory Responsibilities
In several instances, the head coach must advise, coordinate, and support a staff of high school assistant coaches and middle school coaches in conjunction with the athletic director and respective principal.

Job Goal
To instruct athletes in fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for individual and team success. Also to demonstrate behaviors leading to socially acceptable character development, self‑discipline, self‑confidence, and pride of accomplishment. Continuous learning through coaching clinics, observations, and consultations.

General

The success of athletic programs has a strong influence on the community’s image. Public exposure and pressure for winning performance are responsibilities that must not override sportsmanship and mental health objectives.
The position includes additional aspects such as extended time, risk of injury, and due process concerns.
The description provides sufficient guidance for typical responsibilities; otherwise the coach shall use common sense and good judgment.

Duties and Responsibilities

Thorough knowledge of all athletic policies approved by the board and responsible for their implementation by the sports staff.
Knowledge of existing system, state and league regulations; consistently implementing and interpreting them for staff.
Understanding of proper administrative line of command and refers all requests or grievances through appropriate channels.
Established fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff; designs conferences, clinics, and meetings to ensure staff awareness.
Trains and informs staff, encourages professional growth, and promotes clinic attendance per local policy.
Delegates duties, supervises implementation, analyzes staff effectiveness, and evaluates assistants at season’s end.
Maintains discipline, manages grievances, and works to increase morale and cooperation.
Performs additional duties assigned by the athletic director/principal.
Assists in scheduling, transportation, and requirements for tournaments and special events.
Prepares for scheduled events, adheres to facility times, and coordinates with maintenance and staff.
Provides documentation for state and system requirements (physical examinations, parental consent, eligibility).
Ensures safeguards for equipment and sites.
Advises the athletic director and recommends policy, method, or procedural changes.
Mentors athletes in character traits such as trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
Monitors athlete grades and conduct.
Provides assistance and safeguards at all practices, games, and travel.
Provides training and rules specific to each sport to participants.
Initiates injury, medical, and emergency programs.
Documents disabling injuries and submits to the athletic office within 24 hours.
Directs student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
Determines discipline, outlines due‑process procedures, and communicates with parents regarding withdrawals or ineligibility.
Assists athletes with college or advanced education selection.
Participates in budgeting with the athletic director, establishing equipment and season requirements; recommends equipment specifications.
Remains accountable for equipment costs and losses; issues, stores, reconditions equipment; submits inventory records.
Marks and identifies equipment before issuing or storing.
Monitors equipment rooms and coaches’ offices; authorizes access.
Ensures athletes occupy only authorized areas at appropriate times.
Checks locker rooms for cleanliness and maintenance before and after events.
Secures doors, lights, windows, and locks before departure if custodians absent.
Instills respect for equipment and property.
Organizes parents, coaches, players, and guests for preseason meetings.
Recruits new athletes and promotes the sport within the school and community.
Manages releases to local media and ensures their validity.
Maintains good relations with media, booster clubs, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
Presents schedules, tournaments, and results to media.
