Description
The Assistant Director of Academic Advising for Athletics reports to and works closely with the Associate Director of Academic Advising for Athletics to lead, organize, and implement all aspects of academic advising for student-athletes. S/he assists student-athletes in exploring and identifying their educational goals and developing academic plans while maintaining compliance with Rice University, NCAA, and the American Athletic Conference rules and regulations.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree.
- 2+ years of experience in academic advising for athletics.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills; excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; independence and initiative; proactive attitude towards students.
- Ability to interact and collaborate with staff and faculty leaders, gain the trust and confidence of students, and train students for positions of leadership.
- Diplomacy, patience, and tact necessary to successfully address a wide range of interactions with administrators, faculty, staff, students, parents, and community members.
Essential Functions:
- Assists with assigned advising committee through letter writing, data collection, and assessment.
- Advises undergraduate students across a wide variety of interests and needs.
- Assists with preparation and delivery of Orientation Week programming.
- Prepares and provides presentations for administrators, faculty advisors, collaborative offices, and students during Orientation Week and throughout the academic year.
- Research and reports on current best and progressive practices for general and specialized areas of academic advising.
- Assists with creating and distributing academic advising resources including information from peer schools, national associations, Rice academic departments, and collaborative offices.
- Advises students through individual appointments and centralized and residential college information sessions.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
