Description
This position reports to the Associate Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and is part of the Student Wellness, Recreation, and Athletics department. This position is responsible for building and sustaining a quality, competitive intercollegiate Men’s Wrestling program, which focuses on the development of student-athletes, supports the mission of the college, and requires an understanding of and commitment to the values of The Evergreen State College and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
Essential Functions:
- Coach and direct intercollegiate team and activities during competitive season (late October to mid-March); plan and implement daily training schedule.
- Coordinate and schedule home and away pre-season and non-conference competition in accordance with NAIA and Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) regulations and identified pre-season budget; work with Athletics staff to plan and develop travel itineraries for all Conference travel trips.
- Coach and direct team activities in the non-competitive season (May-October).
- Plan and implement summer and fall training schedules within NAIA 24-week policy.
- Create and distribute off season fitness programs to guide student-athlete individual preparation.
- Supervise all support staff, including Assistant Coaches, Volunteer assistants, and student-athlete support staff.
- Accompany and supervise teams on all travel trips.
- Plan and implement ongoing recruitment strategy that aligns with identified program, department, and institutional objectives. In accordance with NAIA policy, coordinate campus visits, maintain database of prospective student-athletes, and coordinate and track application fee waiver requests.
- Plan and implement ongoing retention strategy which aligns with identified program, department, and institutional objectives.
- Monitor academic progress through mid-quarter and end of quarter progress reports and credit tracking; review academic progress based on intended pathway and institutional graduation requirements and provide academic support and/or referral for tutoring, advising etc.; and track academic progress per NAIA continuing eligibility policies.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- In-depth knowledge of the sport of intercollegiate Folk wrestling, including rules, regulations, and strategies.
- Ability to comprehend and follow NAIA and CCC rules, regulations, and guidelines, particularly all NAIA requirements related to initial eligibility for prospective first-year students and transfer students.
- Commitment to fostering success through player development, proactive coaching, and creating a team culture of engagement, shared purpose, and accountability.
- Knowledge of strategies to recruit student-athletes capable of both helping Evergreen be successful in competition and benefiting from the academic experiences provided by the college.
- Ability to understand and communicate relevant admission information to prospective student-athletes.
- Understanding of the importance of retaining student-athletes and knowledge of strategies to support student-athletes academically, psychologically, and physically.
- Ability to communicate respectfully and work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and to foster a climate of equity and belonging.
- Knowledge of student development theory to the degree that it has a positive impact on student-athletes, Recreation & Athletics, and Student Affairs.
