Swim Coach – Junior Assistant

The West Springfield Park & Recreation Department seeks a reliable, trustworthy, engaging, motivated and experienced “Junior” Assistant Coaches to bring a positive, energetic, and forward-thinking presence to the Torpedoes Swim Team. The West Springfield Torpedoes is a competitive swim program that serves the youth of West Springfield during two distinct swim seasons (Winter & Summer).

Examples of Duties:

• Assist Head & Assistant Coaches with structured practices tailored to meet the needs of each training group.
• Coordinate swimming, dryland training, and meet schedules seasonally (Winter and Summer).
• Teach brand new swimming styles or strokes.
• Educate swimmers on water safety.
• Use a range of activities to improve water confidence.
• Expected to enter water to provide direction to younger swimmers.
• Teach and perfect skills like flips, kicks, body rolls, floating, and breath control.

Typical Qualifications:

• Three plus years of swimming experience preferred.
• Experience leading and mentoring swimmers of all levels.
• Strong coaching acumen including solid knowledge of stroke technique and training.
• Strong enthusiasm and desire for continued growth in an environment of respect, integrity, caring, and understanding.
• Strong organizational and clear communication skills.
• Passion for competitive swimming.
