Job Overview
The primary duty of an assistant coach is to be an effective teacher and role model for our student/athletes. The ability to teach fundamental skills of your sport, sportsmanship, safety, strategy, team play, physical/mental fitness and nutrition is paramount for a successful coach to demonstrate on a daily basis. Teaching the importance of academics, degree completion and life skills is also key to performing your job well as an assistant coach.
Duties:
- Teach and enforce the “Monarch Expectations” in the student/athlete handbook.
- Establish team guidelines and policies and procedures for enforcement, within Methodist University and NCAA guidelines.
- Conduct tryouts for selection of varsity and, if needed, junior varsity squads.
- Plan trips and make team travel arrangements.
- Arrange for systematic purchase, issuance, storage, maintenance care and inventory of equipment and uniforms.
- Obtain and supervise team managers.
- Scout opposing teams as necessary, develop game plan strategies and coach team during games and practices.
- Assist Head Coach with practice and games.
- Adhere to and enforce all Methodist University, USA-South and NCAA rules.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree required; previous collegiate coaching and demonstrated experience in the recruitment and retention of student-athletes at the NCAA Division III level preferred.
- Successful candidates will demonstrate the potential for collaborative leadership, a high degree of personal initiative, and a commitment to student engagement and belonging.
- Candidates must have the ability to relate effectively to current and prospective student-athletes, exhibit strong time management and organizational skills, and demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as knowledge of NCAA and USA South Conference rules and regulations.
