About the position
The Athletic Director is responsible for leading and implementing an educational, inclusive, and student-centered athletics program that aligns with Gateway High School’s mission and values.
This role oversees all aspects of the athletics program, including scheduling, logistics, compliance, facilities, student-athlete support, communications, and program development. The Athletic Director works closely with coaches, student-athletes, families, school staff, and league partners to ensure a strong, equitable, and positive athletics experience.
Gateway’s athletics program currently supports eight teams across fall, winter, and spring seasons and participates in the North Coast Section (D-IV), Bay Area Conference, and Bay Counties League Central.
We have an on-campus gym, fitness center and student-athlete resource center with on-site parking, and we use San Francisco Rec & Parks fields to support our soccer & baseball programs. This role does require mostly afternoon and evening work hours, with occasional weekends and summer work.
Responsibilities
• Program Leadership & Culture
• Lead the development and implementation of a student-centered athletics program aligned with Gateway’s mission and values
• Hire, supervise, support, and develop coaches and team support staff
• Foster a healthy, inclusive, and positive culture across all teams
• Provide social and emotional support to student-athletes and coaches
• Hold listening sessions with athletes and coaches to gather feedback and improve the program
• Advocate for departmental improvements and long-term program growth
• Represent Gateway at league and section meetings
• Collaborate with Gateway Middle School Athletic Director to align and improve programming
• Ensure compliance with all league, section, and Title IX regulations
• Scheduling & Logistics
• Develop and maintain a comprehensive athletics master schedule
• Coordinate facility usage across Gateway’s schools, teams, PE classes, electives, and outside groups
• Schedule contests, scrimmages, exhibitions, and tournaments
• Request and confirm off-campus facilities
• Arrange transportation and travel logistics
• Schedule and confirm officials for all contests
• Enter athletic practices and events into school calendars
• Publicize deadlines and ensure eligibility paperwork completion
• Administer games and special athletics events (e.g., tournaments, alumni games)
• Student-Athlete Support & Academic Monitoring
• Monitor academic progress and citizenship of student-athletes
• Communicate regularly with teachers, families, and student support staff
• Encourage student-athletes to succeed academically and socially
• Support the recruitment and retention of student-athletes
• Promote student leadership and teamwork
• Facilities, Equipment & Operations
• Manage athletics equipment and uniform inventory
• Oversee ordering, maintenance, and storage of equipment
• Maintain the fitness center and student-athlete resource center to ensure spaces remain clean and organized
• Provide supervision in athletics spaces during designated times
• Ensure safe and effective use of athletics facilities
• Be able to operate game clocks, scoring systems, and event timing systems
• Communication & Community Engagement
• Serve as the primary communication point for athletics
• Communicate schedules, updates, cancellations, and logistics to families and staff
• Organize preseason informational meetings for athletes and families
• Coordinate end-of-season events and awards celebrations
• Manage athletics-related communications and social media
• Promote athletics participation and community engagement
• Coordinate carpool and travel communications when necessary
• Budgeting & Program Development
• Develop and manage the athletics department budget
• Support strategic investment in athletics programming
• Oversee coach budgets and booster funds
• Support fundraising initiatives
• Evaluate program effectiveness and recommend improvements
• Support the design and development of athletics spaces and resources
• Develop and manage partnerships with local businesses, nonprofits, and community organizations to support athletic programs and initiatives
• Administrative Leadership
• Maintain accurate records and compliance documentation
• Ensure eligibility documentation and waivers are completed
• Train and supervise student managers and support staff
• Step into operational leadership when additional coverage is required
• Coordinate with school leadership on athletics priorities
Requirements
• Background and experience in sports, passion for athletics and a deep understanding of the contribution that sports can make to a rounded education.
• Strong handle on logistics, communication (both written and spoken, in person and by phone, text and email, with both teenagers and adults)
• Ability to collaborate, to multi-task and triage in a high pressure, deadline based environment
• Commitment to Gateway’s mission is essential, including a desire to work with a diverse student body
• Desire to work collaboratively with colleagues and parents/guardians and to be part of building the larger school culture and community
• Initiative, flexibility and creativity to build upon a growing program
• First-Aid, AED, Concussion awareness and various other certifications (which can be completed post-hire)
• Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds
• Week night and Saturday availability

• Experience working with high school students in an urban public school highly preferred
